PastPerfect Technical Bulletin 01-2005
Upgrading Virtual Exhibit version 3 to Virtual Exhibit version 4
Revised: 1/20/2005
Scope: PastPerfect Version 3.0A5 (or above) and Virtual Exhibit 3.0, and Windows 98, ME, 2000 Professional, XP Home, or XP Professional.
Notes: If you have VE installed on multiple workstations, you will need to perform the installation at each. If you have not installed or do not wish to import your old site, please contact the support office. You must have already installed PastPerfect Version 4 and imported your PastPerfect data and images for this procedure to work.
  1. Backing up your PastPerfect Version 4.0 data:
    1. Start PastPerfect Version 4.0
    2. Click on the "Backup" button.
    3. Choose the option to "Backup Data to Hard Drive."
    4. When the backup is complete close the PastPerfect program completely.

  2. Backing up your Virtual Exhibit Version 3:
    1. Start the Virtual Exhibit Software and click on the "Utilities" button located at the top of the Web Site Designer.
    2. Click on the "Backup Current Site" button.
    3. Choose the option to "Backup to Harddrive."
    4. This will create a backup file of your current site. When the backup is complete, click "Ok" or the "Close" button on that window.
    5. Click "Close" again and click "Exit" to close completely out of the Virtual Exhibit program.

  3. Download & Install the Upgrade:
    1. To download the upgrade file, please go to http://www.museumsoftware.com/upgradeVE.htm and click on the link "Click here to download."
    2. Choose the option to "Save" this file and save it to your Windows Desktop.
    3. After the file is downloaded, locate the file "VE4Upgrade.exe" on the Desktop and double click to start the installation process for the upgrade. (If you are running Windows XP, you may see a window that says, "The publisher could not be verified, are you sure you want to run this software?" Click the "Run" button on this message.)
    4. Be sure the first window upon starting the installation says "This program will install the Virtual Exhibit 4.0 Upgrade," and click "Next."
    5. Click "Next" again to install the Virtual Exhibit to C:\pp4 or change the path to reflect where PastPerfect version 4 is installed on your local computer.
    6. Click "Finish" to complete the installation.

  4. Import your 3.0 Virtual Exhibit Site:
    1. On your desktop, double click on the new VE icon to open the new Virtual Exhibit 4. (It will open to a screen that says Virtual Exhibit Evaluation.)
    2. Click on the "Utilities" button at the top of the front page of the Web Site Designer.
    3. Then click the button that says "Unlock or Import from Old VE."
    4. On the right side of the screen, there is a box that says Old VE folder, be sure this says C:\pp3 or wherever PastPerfect version 3.0 is installed on your local computer.
    5. Then click the "Import Data from Old VE button."
    6. When it is complete, you will get a message saying the data has been imported, click "Ok."
    7. Click "Close" to exit the Import Data window, and click "Close" to exit the Utilities window.

You should now have your 3.0 Virtual Exhibit site imported into your 4.0 Virtual Exhibit program. Please contact our support office at 800-562-6080 if you have any questions.
