3. PastPerfect Featured User: Paine-Gillam-Scott Museum, St. Johns, Michigan
Special thanks to Diane Carlson for contributing this month’s article!

The Paine-Gillam-Scott House is the home of the Clinton County Historical Society’s Museum and holds the distinction of being the oldest brick residence in the city of St. Johns, Michigan.  A walking tour of Paine-Gillam-Scott House is indeed a journey back to the early 1890's and before.

Clinton County Historical Society was granted permission to operate the site as a museum in September 1978.  The house was restored and has operated as the Paine-Gillam-Scott Museum ever since.  The Museum is named for Mr. John Paine, who built the home in 1860, Dr. S. E. Gillam, who remodeled the house in the 1890's, and Dr. W. Scott, the last residential owner.  The property was listed in the State Register of Historic Sites in 1980, and had the honor of receiving a Michigan Historical Marker during special dedication ceremonies on July 29, 1998.  In addition to the main house, the complex now includes a carriage house featuring agricultural and industrial exhibits.  A third building, formerly the office of Drs. Gillam and Scott, houses a permanent 1860's General Store Exhibit.

The Paine-Gillam-Scott Museum opens its doors in spring each year to the general public as well as to school and special interest groups.  In addition to tours, annual activities include Ancestral Celebrations, Heritage Crafts demonstrated during the St. Johns Mint Festival, Friends of the Museum Tea, and a Victorian Christmas.

The Paine-Gillam-Scott Museum was restored and is staffed completely by volunteers. In 2007, the Paine-Gillam-Scott Museum was given a generous donation from the St. Johns Lion's Club to purchase computers and PastPerfect Software, including the Multi-Media Upgrade and Virtual Exhibit.  Volunteers are hard at work inserting digital images of all artifacts and entering information from 3x5 index cards that have accumulated since 1975.  Our goal is to accomplish a thorough inventory and catalog check of all artifacts in the Museum Collection.  PastPerfect’s support staff has assisted in making the transition smooth, and the software itself guarantees accuracy in preserving years of work by dedicated volunteers.

4. New PastPerfect-Online Featured Sites!

Sharing your collection over the internet has never been easier! More collections research is being done from the comfort of home than ever before.  To help cater to this trend, PastPerfect Software, Inc. created PastPerfect-Online.

PastPerfect-Online is secure: PastPerfect-Online uploads a copy of the records, images and fields that you select into a searchable online database; confidential or sensitive information can remain private and under your control. To keep your images secure, PastPerfect-Online contains a watermarking tool that can watermark all of the images that you place online without affecting your permanent images.

PastPerfect-Online is searchable: PastPerfect-Online makes researching your institution’s collections easier for visitors by enabling keyword and customizable advanced searches. Visitors can also research your collections with PastPerfect-Online’s Click and Search feature. Additionally, if a visitor desires to view the essence of your collection they can use the Random Images Search, which will display thumbnail images at random from all of your uploaded catalog records.

PastPerfect-Online is easy to use: In addition to being safe and fully searchable, PastPerfect-Online is easy to use and update, since no web design or programming expertise is necessary! Once you select the records that you wish to appear online, the Web Publishing Wizard helps create the fields and implement the options for your site.  Just create and upload the files and our support technicians take care of the rest!  With PastPerfect-Online, you can also add your museum’s logo and add design elements that compliment your existing website.

Throughout the year we will be featuring PastPerfect-Online sites on our website at http://www.museumsoftware.com/client_list.htm.

This month’s featured site is:

5. Tech Tip: Printing a Label to an Individual Label Printer

We have had questions regarding how to print to an individual label printer. Before getting started, please note the size of the label you will be using as well as which Contact Label Style within PastPerfect you want to use.

The following directions work with both DYMO and Avery individual label printers.

  1. From the Main Screen of PastPerfect, select Reports.
  2. Select Contacts.
  3. Select the Label Style (i.e. Contact Labels Style #2).
  4. Select Modify Report Layout.
  5. Select Create New Custom Label.
  6. Select Yes.
  7. Choose a layout that has the correct height and width and contains only one column (i.e. for the DYMO label style #30252 (3.5 by 1.1 inches) the corresponding Avery 4163 label could be selected).
  8. Select OK.
  9. Go to File/Page Setup and then Print Setup.
  10. Select your DYMO or Avery label writer as your printer and select the label style you are using as your paper size.
  11. Select Landscape as your Orientation.
  12. Select OK.
  13. Verify that the label layout within Page Layout on the Page Setup screen is correct.
  14. Select OK.
  15. Add the fields to the label that you wish to appear when printing.
Note: You can copy the fields from the old label, before you select “Create New Custom Label”, or copy them from a different label style, and then paste the fields into your new label. Please be sure you are adding the fields in the white space between the “Page Header” and the “Detail” bands.  Do not move the bands up or down on the screen or you will alter the size of the label.
  1. Select File/Save and then File/Close.
  2. To implement your changes please select the radio button in front of Custom Layout.
  3. Select Exit.
  4. Before printing to your individual label printer, please select the radio button for your modified label.
