5. Tip of the Month- More Resources to Help You

Last month we provided you with some resources that can help answer your collections management or registration methods questions. This month, we found a few websites and a discussion group that we thought might be helpful in dealing with conservation situations:

* The Northeast Document Conservation Center offers tips for dealing with mold and books/ paper collections in their article found at ... http://www.nedcc.org/plam3/tleaf39.htm

* The National Park Service offers Conservation Tips through their website section called “Ask the Conservator”… http://www.cr.nps.gov/museum/centennial/

* Another website with some generally helpful information is http://www.museumstuff.com.

* Another free resource available is the Museum-L listserv, an e-mail discussion group of museum professionals, who can offer their advice for ways to deal with any issues in your museum. You can view the archives of posts, find out more information or join the list at http://home.ease.lsoft.com/archives/museum-l.html.

The American Association of Museums (www.aam-us.org) and the American Association for State and Local History (www.aaslh.org) also have a number of resources on collections management issues available through their websites. In some cases, you will also find a Members Only section where your membership provides you with access to further resources online.

6. Look Who’s Using PastPerfect… The International Museum of the Horse at the Kentucky Horse Park

The Kentucky Horse Park was established in Lexington, Kentucky in 1978 to honor the horse, its history and its contributions to mankind. The park is owned and operated by the Commonwealth of Kentucky and is located on 1,200 acres of land in the heart of Bluegrass. Throughout the year the park welcomes over 100,000 visitors, and hosts nearly 60 horse shows along with a variety of concerts, weddings, family reunions and conferences. The International Museum of the Horse is the educational center of the park dedicated to telling the story of mankind’s relationship with the horse throughout history. The museum is the largest and most comprehensive equestrian museum in the world. It houses over 5,700 artifacts, 7,000 photographs and a 3,000 volume equestrian research library. The museum exhibits include the 560 piece Calumet Farm trophy collection, a collection of thirty 19th century horse-drawn carriages and racing vehicles along with exhibits about the draft horse in America, horse racing in Japan and the various horse breeds of the world. The museum hosts a variety of changing exhibitions of equestrian art and history including internationally significant exhibitions. such as Imperial China: The Art of the Horse in Chinese History in 2000 and All the Queen’s Horses: The Role of the Horse in British History in 2003, in the 10,000 square foot special exhibitions galleries.

With the passage of time and changing curators and registrars, the management of this ever-growing collection of horse-drawn vehicles, trophies, saddles, harness and other horse accoutrements had become a complex mix of accessioning styles and methods. In 1999 the museum purchased PastPerfect and began the task of unifying the management system and conducting a long overdue inventory. Lynn Reynolds, Registrar and Associate Curator at the museum, says, "Five years later, we have a better grip on what we have and where it is. The flexibility of the program has allowed the museum to customize PastPerfect to fit our unique collection. Although we have yet to use PastPerfect to its full potential it has made one registrar’s life a whole lot easier."
