Using PastPerfect: Battleship New Jersey, Camden, NJ Built in the Philadelphia
Naval Yard, the USS New Jersey had her first commissioning May
23, 1943 for involvement in World War II. During her forty-eight years
of active service, the New Jersey participated in World War II,
the Korean and Vietnam Wars, as well as the Beirut Crisis, earning a
combined nineteen Battle and Campaign Stars, making her the most decorated
American battleship. Not only is the New Jersey the most decorated
battleship in American history, but also one of the longest, built at
887 feet, 7 inches. The New Jersey served as the flagship of
the Fleet when Admiral William F. Halsey Jr. took command of the Task
Force operations at sea during WWII. The ship's service continued through
the decades and was under the command of Admiral Paul Reason until the
late 1980s. During her decades of service, the New Jersey became
home to over fifty thousand great men who participated in these world-changing
events. Alterations were made to the battleship at the beginning of
each new commissioning, and with each new addition, the ship became
to be a testimony to the changes in society and technology. Finally
decommissioned in February 1991 for a fourth and final time, the New
Jersey came to life again ten years later as a museum ship in Camden,
New Jersey. The stories of these men, the equipment which served them,
and the compartments they called home are all important aspects that
compose the history and overall significance of the USS New Jersey. Additional information about the Battleship New Jersey Museum and Memorial and its programs can be found at www.battleshipnewjersey.org.
When measuring items with a ruler, it is sometimes difficult to remember the conversion rate when translating fractions into decimals for PastPerfect. For reference, here is a conversion chart that you can use for helping calculate measurements in PastPerfect to three decimals:
7. Tech Tip: Condition Fields vs. Condition Reports in PastPerfect With PastPerfect, you can track not only each items movement and status in the collection, but also the condition of the item over time using the catalogs condition fields and Detailed Condition Reports. The condition fields in each catalog record enable you to briefly describe the items general condition as well as give a one word rating (Good, Fair, Poor, Unstable, etc.). You can also set up a schedule and document routine maintenance procedures for each item. These fields are located directly within the Condition and Maintenance Information screen accessed by pressing the Condition button at the top of the lower right quadrant of your screen. Detailed Condition Reports are used for more thorough examinations, including recording the condition of the surface, parts, material, and structure, as well as noting any physical damage and work required. Estimated repair costs, the reason for the report, and staff responsible are also included. As Detailed Condition Reports are created, a history of the items condition is recorded and sorted by date. A complete listing of condition reports may be printed and filed along with your Catalog Detail Reports for each items hard copy documentation. To add a new Detailed Condition Report, press the Add New Report button located at the bottom of the Condition screen. This will bring up a new window to enter the detailed information. Using the condition fields and Detailed Condition Reports will provide quick access to condition information as well as thorough documentation of your collection. 8. Contact Information |
